Another strange item I'm trying to identify is The "Karo" Balloter, produced by G.J. Bevens, of 79 Bentham Road, South Hackney, London N.E., illustrated above.

Seemingly dating from somewhere about 1890-1910, it consists a 3-inch square shallow box with a hinged lid, similar to a small jewellery case. Contained within is a freely rotating brass pointer moving around a printed card dial of numbers arranged in six [later correction: seven. Thanks Robin for pointing this out] unequal segments.

A clue, surely, lies in the numbers themselves but I can see no logic or likely application in their arrangement.

Any information, considered suggestions, or even wild guesses, would be gratefully received.

Cocaine as a cure for hay-fever

The earliest recorded case of hay-fever dates back to the 16th century. From that time occasional references were made by various writers upon this subject.

However, it was not until the 19th century - particularly from the 1870s onwards - that the problem was systematically investigated and proved to be caused by pollen of grasses and plants.

The rare work shown above, although outlining correctly the cause, falls some way short of providing successful cure, proposing, inter-alia, the application by spraying of a 5 percent solution of cocaine, medicated cigarettes, and electro-cauterization. Early books on hay fever are very collectable - this is a particularly nice example of the rare 1907 first edition published by Glaisher of William Lloyd's work on the subject.

A scarce and very large (47 inches x 35 inches, 120 cms x 89 cms) German double-sided military intelligence map dating from 1940/41, showing the locations of Britain's wartime radio stations including Navy radio transmitters and Air Force transmitters with direction-finding facilities is for sale at http://ukbooklink.com/ncc2jp

One side of the map shows Britain's radio transmitters, the other side Britain's telephone and telegraph network. This information - particularly the Air Force direction-finding transmitter locations - was of clear strategic importance in planning offensive action against Britain whether a land invasion or bombing raids.
